Donating your time is a vital contribution to our organization. She Leads Justice has volunteer opportunities on our Information and Referral (I&R) line.

If you are interested in volunteering, please review the application instructions under the current volunteer opportunities below.

Who are our volunteers?

• People who want to actively participate in supporting women, girls & their families
• People who are non-judgmental and accepting
• People who respect a diverse work environment

How much time would I be expected to volunteer?

That depends your availability and your interests. Volunteers are typically needed Monday-Friday during 9-5 business hours.

What type of work do volunteers do?

There are different ways you can help She Leads Justice make a difference! Examples include answering our Information & Referral (I&R), serving on a committee, or helping at events.

She Leads Justice volunteers should have strong communication, writing and computer skills. Volunteers are expected to demonstrate general work-related skills such as punctuality, responsibility, and thoroughness.

Want to make a difference in the lives of people in your community? She Leads Justice seeks passionate volunteers to staff our Information and Referral (I&R) line. I&R is a unique service that works to narrow the civil legal in Connecticut. We train volunteers to provide callers with free legal information on primarily family law and employment discrimination, as well as attorney and community agency referrals.

Because we provide volunteers with in-depth, ongoing training and support, we require at least a 6-month commitment to our program.

Responsibilities include:

• Answering telephone calls and email questions on civil legal issues
• Collecting demographic information and inputting data into our online software system

Requirements:

• A minimum commitment of six months
• Must be available for 2-4 shifts between Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (shifts are flexible), with a commitment to approximately 4-6 hours per week total.
• Compassionate and ability to work with diverse populations
• Spanish speakers are especially needed and strongly encouraged to apply

She Leads Justice’s Legal Education Program serves 1,200 clients a year and provides free legal information, legal advocacy, and attorney and community agency referrals. The majority of our clients are low-income women navigating Connecticut’s civil courts on matters related to divorce, custody, child support, domestic violence, employment discrimination, immigration, housing, education, consumer issues, and LGBTQ-related issues. She Leads Justice’s role within the community would not be possible without the dedication and efforts of the 100+ attorneys in She Leads Justice’s Cooperating Attorney Network (She Leads Justice CAN).

Attorneys can help narrow the justice gap in critical ways:

• Serve as a Referral Attorney by accepting calls screened and referred by She Leads Justice’s I&R line and legal advocacy program
• Provide your legal expertise
• Lead presentations and workshops on legal rights
• Train Legal Education staff and volunteers on specific topics
• Assist in reviewing She Leads Justice’s educational materials
• Participate on She Leads Justice Board of Directors
• Write amicus briefs
• Participate in She Leads Justice events

All CAN referral attorneys offer She Leads Justice clients a minimum free 15-30 minute initial consultation, but some also offer sliding scale fees, payment plans, limited-scope representation, and/or pro bono services.

Our program is flexible, and our staff will work with you to ensure your experience is positive by identifying your interests according to practice specialties and geographic locations, the number of cases you would like referred to you, and any other preferences.

A Component of  She Leads Justice’s Legal Education Program

Many of the clients who come to She Leads Justice are some of the most vulnerable people in Connecticut: mothers earning less than $25,000 a year. They are already facing an economic battle to provide for their families and their legal issues tend to add to that struggle.

Thanks to the support of community members like you, “Nilda’s Closet” (affectionately named after She Leads Justice’s Bilingual Community Advocate, Nilda Rivera), is filled with books, winter gloves, toiletries, gift cards for groceries—basic essentials to help families through financial distress.

Shirley Bysiewicz, tenured Professor and longtime law librarian at the University of Connecticut School of Law, was one of She Leads Justice’s founders and the first President of She Leads Justice. By joining the Legacy Society, bearing her name, friends of She Leads Justice will help ensure that Shirley’s goal of advancing the rights of women will continue into the future.

Membership to the Legacy Society is open to those who have included She Leads Justice in their wills and other estate planning.
