Careers at She Leads Justice

We are She Leads Justice (formerly Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund/CWEALF), an antiracist, intersectional feminist nonprofit in Connecticut. We use our institutional power to serve and center women and communities most impacted by systemic injustice and oppression. Using a justice and equity lens, we work to close the civil legal justice gap, advocate for policy that improves economic security, and organize for statewide systemic change.

We’re Hiring a COMMUNITY ORGANIZING DIRECTOR!

We’re looking for a new Community Organizing Director who is ready to take our 2-year-old organizing program to the next level! This position serves as a critical bridge between the State Capitol, our clients, and women statewide. The Community Organizer Director will be tasked with creating new systems to help mobilize women in communities and inform our work across the organization and our partners in the Connecticut advocacy movement.

We’re looking for someone who is bilingual with lived experience, deep ties to marginalized communities in Connecticut, and who is a creative and radical systems-change thinker. We need a knowledgeable, charismatic, go-getter who courageously works with women to ensure that women’s voices are heard in all spaces where decisions about women’s lives are made!

The Community Organizing Director reports to the Executive Director, and works closely with the Policy Director, the Legal Education team, and the Fundraising Advisor.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Building SLJ’s community organizing arm:
    • Developing systems that will help SLJ mobilize women statewide
    • Curating our current list of organizing participants and growing the base while ensuring that women of color and women living with poverty are at the center of our work
    • Keeping open communication with women leaders in community and women at large state-wide
    • Continuing our current relationships and foster new community partnerships
  • Working to ensure we are using our institutional power and resources to benefit the communities we serve and to strengthen the connection between our Legal Education and Policy programs
  • Developing and facilitating Women’s Wisdom Circles, our flagship Community Organizing activity. Women’s Wisdom Circles are conversation circles where women across the state gather to share information about their experiences and expertise from lived experience, with the goal of informing our Public Policy agenda and the legislative strategy for engagement of women statewide.
  • Organizing and facilitating teach-ins, workshops, and other public education opportunities to present to the community.
  • Advising the Executive Director on trends and happenings in the field and working with them to ensure our messaging is reflective of women’s needs.
  • Working with the Communications team to document the realities of women’s lives across the state and to advise on the best ways to use online tools for organizing.
  • Participating in grant writing and reporting activities, as needed in partnership with the Fundraising Advisor.
  • Working with the Policy Director to create streamlined resources and content for legislative advocacy and community organizing events and actions.

  • Deep cultural competency and commitment to creating access and comfort in interacting with people of diverse backgrounds (age, race, class, etc.).
